Stanway Villa Football Club were presented with a cheque for £5,000, that will go towards developing new junior football teams over the 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 seasons.

The club hopes to establish new teams at Under-7 and Under-8 level, which will cater for the ever-increasing demand in this age group locally.

The grant will assist with the initial set-ups costs involved in starting new junior teams, such as coach and pitch hire, first-aid kits, and the training of a number of volunteers to become FA qualified coaches.
Funded by the Premier League, The FA, and the Government via Sport England, the Football Foundation is the nation’s largest sports charity. Since it was launched in 2000, the Foundation has awarded around 8,000 grants worth more than £420m towards improving grassroots sport, which it has used to attract additional partnership funding of over £520m.

Julian Baines, President at Stanway Villa FC, said: “Having been one of the original players at Stanway Villa and now President of the Club I am delighted that we have been awarded this grant to enable us to provide football coaching to the extra teams. The Club has grown immensely during the last few years and it is great that the Football Foundation have been able to help us.”

Paul Beales, Club Chairman at Stanway Villa FC, said: “On behalf of Stanway Villa FC, I would like to thank the Football Foundation for this cheque. This will let the club help bring more young players into the game. Clubs like ours provide young players with a friendly environment in which they can develop their football skills and at the same time make new friends, and learn to play within a team. Things have come a long way since I was a young player.”

Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “We warmly congratulate Stanway Villa FC and the Essex County FA for their hard work and dedication in securing this award. Our Grow the Game scheme helps fulfil one of the Foundation’s core objectives, which is getting more people playing more football. During the 2009-10 season, Grow the Game projects attracted more than 21,000 new players to our national game.”

“This new project in Colchester is but one example of thousands across the country that the Football Foundation is supporting with money provided by our funding partners – the Premier League, the FA and the Government.”
